Collectibles-General (Antiques)/Musty smell in Baby furniture

Question
My wife and I are having our first baby and we are borrowing her sisters crib and changing table.  Unfortunately they were kept in the cellar of the house and smell musty like.  Is there anything we can do to the crib and changing table to eliminate the musty smell with out damaging the set?  The set is made out of Red Cherry wood and is only 7 to 8 years old.

Answer
Hi Greg
Nice to hear from you.
First I would try Murphys oil soap on the crib (hardware store).
It will not harm the wood in any way.
If the smell is still there (which I doubt), try warm soapy water with some household bleach. About 1/4 cup in your bucket of water.
Hope this helps
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
