Collectibles-General (Antiques)/Old dining room set

Question
Hello Eileen,
I have an OLD dining room set, not sure when it was originally purchased but it looks like something that was built in the 1940's maybe.  Is there a way to know if this set is a good set or not, antique or not?  People have said that I should look underneath each piece for a number or something.  I've looked and there are no numbers or stamp.
Thank you!
Janet

Answer
Hi Janet
Nice to hear from you.
Without seeing your set I can't comment on its being good or not.
The numbers are simply factory numbers allotted to various pieces for easy inventory.
Look for quality construction. That is the key to good furniture. And if your set has been around since the 40's, it must be pretty good :-)
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
