Collectibles-General (Antiques)/Oriental Sewing Basket

Question
I have a couple of "Oriental" sewing baskets, with beads, coins, and possibly peking glass ring on top.  I'm sure you've seen them on EBay.  I have tried and tried to find out any information on them that I can but have been unsuccessful.  Can you help me?  I even sent a pic to a friend who has friends in China and they took it to antique dealers who knew nothing about them.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hello Candi,
I have a few of these sewing baskets in my own collection and like you, have not been able to come up with a definitive answer.
My hunch -- and again this is only a hunch, is that they were made during the Victorian era when all things "Chinese or Oriental" was fashionable. Many sewing items were made in China during the 1800's for the European market and I suspect that these sewing baskets with the beads were made at that time.

Expertise

I have been a collector of antique sewing tools and thimbles for over 30 years. I am also a dealer in this field and sell on eBay under the name -- serengeti2. I am NOT, and I repeat NOT an expert on antique or vintage domestic household sewing machines used for everyday home sewing. I can offer help when it comes to TOY or miniature collectible sewing machines ONLY.
