Question

marplescandle
I have a pair of handled pewter candleholders. The marks on the bottoms are worn but I can make out W M and some kind of cartouche in between the letters. Underneath there are 4 hallmarks. One of them looks like a gargoyle. I cannot make out the others. The closest name I could come up with was William Marples. You have any idea? Thank you

Answer

These are fake pewterer's marks, used by makers of reproduction pewter wares in Birmingham around 1920-60, which will be the date of your candleholders. The small marks (pseudo-hallmarks), are copies of the marks used by Ingram & Hunt and successor firms of Bewdley around 1780-1840.

CommentThank you... At least I can say that the England stamp on the handle is real.
