Hi Martin

I am attempting to find the history and value of a pewter fireplace mantle.

It was purchased used around 1973 in Ottawa, Canada.  This is all I know of it's history.

My family is the current owner of the mantle, it came with a house we purchased this year.

The markings on the back are the following
No. 47
38x38
RD 379218 (The first 2 letters may be RO)

Thank you
Chris

Thanks for your enquiry. I'm not entirely sure what this is - do you mean a mantle ornament, with a flat back? If so, they are usually late 19th or 20th century. RD probably means registered - i.e. a design registration number.

Not especially valuable objects, but decorative.

Hi Martin
My apologies for not being entirely clear.
The item I am referring to is the actual fire place mantle or frame that surrounds the fireplace.  It is approx 54 inches high x 61 inches accross (top).  It is made completely of pewter.  Any information on value or where to trace it's origin would be appreciated.

That is a most unusual item. Frankly, I'm surprised such a thing exists in pewter. The melting point of the alloy is only about 240 celsius, a temperature most fire surrounds would reach easily. Otherwise, I can't really help, as I've never seen or heard of such a thing in pewter.

Sorry!
