Question
I have a pewter tankard dated 1731 with the name ANNO JOHANN CARL DIETZ across the top. It also has a coat of arms with one lion on each side of what looks like a basket with a sword sticking in the top. The words ES.LEBE.DAS HAND on one side and WERCK.DER.ROICHER  and I think what is the makers mark BER  Any ideas? or can you give me a source?

Answer
-

ANNO = year, i.e. refers to the date. You need to research the name Johann Carl Dietz. There was a Johann Dietz, surgeon, who wrote an autobiography and lived around that time. But was his middle name Carl. Biographical research is not my field - over to you.

Use an online translation system to interpret the text.

If you can send me photos (to stynt@btopenworld.com) I'll comment on authenticity and origin of the piece itself (there are many forgeries and reproductions of this type of thing).
