Question
I HAVE AN OLD DRESSING TABLE WITH WOOD WHEELS. I THINK MY DAUGHTER SAID IT WAS A QUEEN AMNE EARLY NINETEEN HUNDREDS. THE FINISH NEEDS TO BE REDONE IF I USE A SANDER ON IT AND THEN REFINISH WITH STAIN WILL IT LOSE VALUE? I WANT IT TO LOOK NICE BUT DON'T WANT TO RUIN IT.
THANKS
MARILYN

Answer
Hi Marlyn
Nice to hear from you.
Yes your table will lose its value if you sand it.
Never never use a sander on antiques.
What you do by sanding is remove the age of the piece.
This piece sounds lovely Marlyn, and it would be a shame to destroy it.
I also must ask if you have any experience refinishing.
This is a job that requires a bit of practice before attempting a really good piece.
Also are you sure the piece needs refinishing?
Is there any way you could send me a picture to assess this.
Perhaps I can come up with a better fix.

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
