Collectibles-General (Antiques)/Refinishing an old rope bed

Question
Eileen,

I have an old rope bed that physically is in great shape but needs refinishing. I started to take the old varnished off in early fall but found it very hard to remove the varnish using Stripe Ease. Is there some other product that you can recommend to do the job.

Thanks,

Dave

Answer
Hi Dave
Nice to hear from you.
Sometimes its trial and error finding the correct stripper for different jobs, but the "Circa" brand paint and varnish remover will do the trick.
I am up in Canada and we have "Home Hardware" here and their house brand stripper is great too.
I never buy anything but these two.
I always avoid anything with easy in the name LOL..it never is.
Good Luck
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
