Collectibles-General (Antiques)/Repair of old chests

Question
My wife inherited two old chests (probably from the 1800's).  The first is a "real" chest with decorative hinges and latch.  It was brought from England by one of her ancesters.  It had leather handles which are rotted away.  The second is just a box.  It had some type of wire handles, one of which is missing and the other is damaged.  Question: 1.Where Can I get parts to "restore" them?  2.Are they valuable and would I reduce their value by replacing the handles?

Answer
Hi Roger
Nice to hear from you
Here are two links where you will find the parts you need.

I cannot tell you how valuable your trunks are, but a properly done repair will not reduce the value.
Good Luck

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
