Collectibles-General (Antiques)/Repair tambour on rolltop desk

Question
We have a lovely oak Riverside rolltop desk that we purchased in 1990.  The tambour was repaired after 6 years and it recently split with about 14 slats and the handles coming down and the remainder of the slats going into the back of the desk. My husband removed the back, but can't see the tambour.  Can you advise how to access the tambour so he can repair it?  Do we need to remove the cubby section?  Thank you for any assistance you can offer.

Answer
Hi Bev
Nice to hear from you.
Yes the entire top and cubby section will have to be removed.
Then the tambour will come right out and the canvas material that holds it together on the back will need replacing.
Not a hard fix so don't panic.
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
