Collectibles-General (Antiques)/Repairing an iron bed

Question
Dear Eileen,
I was putting together my iron bed and while hammering the rails into the slots-it's the reverse slats with a cone and grove slot-I accidentally chipped a piece off. The piece is not a direct support piece and it possible that the bed could be stable-the rail would not slip out of the slot but I would be wary of it. Is there anyway to repair this? I have heard it is very difficult to weld cast iron. Are there any glues or other alternatives? Thanks,
David

Answer
Hi David
Nice to hear from you.
Sorry there are no other choices for a fix, but cast can certainly be welded.
You just need the correct welder and rod.
This comes directly from my hubby who has welded for many years, and whose father was the local blacksmith.
Can't get a better authority than that LOL.
Kindest Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
