Question
Eileen,

I have just inherited a Singer Sewing machine that has a patented date of Dec 1, 1891 and it has a good deal of rust on it. How can this be safely restored and taken care of? If you cannot answer for me please tell me if you know of someone who can.

Also the leather belt is cracked and dried can anything be done to save it?

I appreciate your taking the time to see if you can help.

Answer
Hi Wendi
Nice to hear from you.
Some rust can be removed with "naval jelly" available at hardware stores, but if the surface is badly pitted its beyond hope.
The belt will need replacing.
There are many Singer sites on line that discuss these old machines and it would be interesting for you to find out the age of yours.
Here is an excellent starting place.

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
