Collectibles-General (Antiques)/Stephen Pewter

Question
I have what appears to be a pewter charger or bowl (?). It's about 10-12 inches in diameter. It is marked Stephen and has an eagle below the name. The metal is very dark and needs a good cleaning but I'm not sure what to do with it. I think it is old but haven't found any information on it. It came out of an estate and could have come from England or America. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks Larry

Answer
Dish is probably the best name for it, or perhaps a soup plate. The mark sounds like a typical 18th and early 19th century maker's touchmark, could be English or American, but I can't identify it from the description. The maker's surname should be below the bird.

Why do you think it needs cleaning? The surface is probably covered in tin oxide, which can be very attractive. Do not attempt to remove this unless you are very confident that the piece will not be damaged - removal involves either aggressive chemicals, skilled mechanical grinding and turning, or a difficult to use electrolysis process. None of these are recommended for the inexperienced!
