Question
Hi, I hope you can help me, I have a walnut table that appears to have a ring of ink, or might be paint on it.I bought it at an auction and it looks like they started stripping it, but I would like some advice before I do anything to it.This table does have a veneer on top.Any ideas?

Answer
Hi Debbie
I just received notice that I am overdo in answering this question.
This happens on occasion and is a problem with the site in this case.
Please forgive the delay.
OK..your veneer table.
If the stripping process was started by someone else, you will have to continue.
Does it look like whoever started it, gave up because of the ink or paint stain?
I ask this because the stripper would have certainly removed the mark if it was paint.
If we are dealing with ink that the srtipper will not remove (although stripper should remove ink), then we must consider that the ink has penetrated the bare wood.
After all stripping is complete, and if the stain remains, you will have to bleach the table top.
I do not suggest sanding a veneer top because it could damage the veneer.
You must purchase wood bleach from the paint section of the hardware store.
This comes in 2 bottles which you mix according to directions.(FOLLOW CAREFULLY)
You must do the entire top with bleach or you will be left with a lighter spot.
Also be aware that one application may not be enough...you may have to use several over the course of a few days.
Then a gentle going over with fine steel wool and you are ready for the finish.
Good Luck
And please get back to me if you need further clarification.
Here is my email so this delay will not happen again.

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
