Collectibles-General (Antiques)/Taking scratches out of a desk

Question
I was at a tag sale this past weekend and came across a lovely desk that was reasonably priced, however, it has seen better days.  It has several deep scratches (I believe one of their children decided to engrave their initials) on it that need to be addressed. Although some nicks and scratches are to be expected these marks that I mention take away from the character of the piece.  I'm trying to decide if I need to begin sanding the piece down and then stain it or are there other options.  Any help you provide would be much appreciated.

Regards,
Cathy

Answer
Hi Cathy
Nice to hear from you.
There are no other options but sanding for these deep scratches.
I have in the past used those hot melt wax furniture sticks on deep scratches with minimal results. They are available at most hardware or paint stores and come in various shades to match the wood...just ask, and its worth a try before sanding.
If you sand, be 100% certain the top is not veneer or you will ruin the desk.
Kindest Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
