Collectibles-General (Antiques)/antique iron bed

Question
I have just purchased an antique iron bed frame in very good condition.  However it is painted a rather gaudy gold color, and I would like to refinish it in black.  How do I go about doing that?

Answer
Hi Sarah
Nice to hear from you.
You have three options for this job.
The very best thing to do would be to have the metal bed sandblasted. Then you could spray it with primer and your top coat over that.
Most auto body shops will do this sandblasting for you.
If this is impossible then you could remove all the loose paint with a wire brush, sand the rest, and spray paint.
The final choice would be stripping with paint stripper, priming then paint.
Personally I would opt for sandblasting.
Good Luck
Regards
Eileen
PS..just another thought.
If the paint now on it is not flaking, you could simply sand and then paint. Sanding would be easy with one of those foam type sanding blocks. Use spray baint.

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
