Question
I read your response to the lady re refinishing her antique mantel, and found it helpful, however, my antique mantel is made out of aromatic cedar, which I do not want to seal in....will tung oil seal in the aroma of this wonderful wood?  The mantel is very old, and the finish has been taken off and ready for sanding. thanks, Rachel

Answer
Hi Rachel
Nice to hear from you and thank you for the positive feedback.
Tung oil or any finish will seal in the cedar odor of your lovely mantle, but personally I feel the wood needs protection of some kind.
Cedar is funny wood to apply a finish to because of the excess oils present in it so possibly you are on the right track with wanting to keep it pure.
I rarely come accross any items made of cedar, but I have certainly come accross some and am never satisfied with the finished look of the treated wood.
I find some of the grain comes up very shiny, and some of it dull. Also areas that just will not dry at all.
So possibly try your way and see if you like the bare wood.
Hope this helps
Kindest Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
