Collectibles-General (Antiques)/antique table?

Question
I have a MERSMAN Library table with a #357 stamped on the underside, along with some pencil writing of #357,the date 10-6-23, 2 intitals and the number 25. The table is in good condition apart from that the wood laminate layers on top are not intack. What type of wood would this be? Would repariring it deflate the value, if it holds any value at this point? It still has the wood flowerette medalions on the sides.I know you do not appraise, but if you could answer these questions I would appreciate it very much. Thank you. Susan

Answer
Hi Susan
Nice to hear from you.
At this point in your tables life it will not be worth much if the wood on top is missing.
The wood is called veneer, and of course I cannot tell you what kind of wood it is without seeing it. Could be oak veneer, birch veneer mahogany veneer the list goes on.
The table was made in 1923.
Sounds like the table would be lovely restored.
Hope this helps
Kindest regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
