Question
I have an antique sideboard that I want to use as a vanity.  Whhat should I use to finish/refinish the piece to keep from getting water/moustier damage?  Thanks for any help.

Answer
Just a PS here Don.
Look into a product called Durathane by Minwax.
This is made for hardwood floors, but it may have better wearing properties and handle moisture better than poly.
I have used this product quite a few times on old home hardwood floor restorations and was very impressed with the lovely mellow look achieved with the satin finish product.
I have also had the chance to see how it wears on these floors, and the verdict is great.
Durathane is an oil based poly too, but perhaps it may give that extra added bit of wear factor that this project needs.
And thanks for the great ratings. It makes helping others worthwhile.

Hi Don
Nice to hear from you.
I would use a good oil based poly on this Don.
Spar varnish is a good choice too, but personally I dislike the look on indoor wood..just me.
And I would apply the finish before the sink is installed and seal the cut edge of the sink hole too.
Also remember that any finish will wear over time so keep an eye out for wear to the finish over time.
You probably know this, but a very good seal under the lip of the sink is a priority here especially.
And a sink that the taps are attached to as oppossed to the taps sitting behind the sink as these often sweat in the humidity and drip on the wood.
Good Luck and a great question
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
