Question
What is the best way to find out what type of wood and how to refinish bedroom furniture we have recently acquired?

Answer
Hi Lois
Nice to hear from you.
If you cannot tell the type of wood your furniture is, you will have to get someone who knows their wood to look at it hands on.
Its virtually impossible to learn this from a book as woods are so varied.
Refinishing is something that anyone can learn to do but few learn correctly.
There are numerous books on the subject available at the library so perhaps start there.
Once you have learned the basic skills its a hobby you will enjoy for many years.
I can certainly send you some simplified instructions on the basic stripping and applying a finish if you request it.
Kindest Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
