Question
I have this desk and it has some sun damage and maybe some water damage.  Grain is not raised but the finish is worn off in places and the color is uneven due to the sun damage.  Someone suggested the Howards product that puts some color back in the wood and shines it up a bit.  Someone also told me that it isn't old enough or rare enough to worry about keeping the original finish and I just have it refinished.  Any help or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

Answer
Hi C Fisher
Nice to hear from you.
Certainly try the product your friend mentioned before a complete refinish.
They are making some wonderful products for the do it your selfer.
Properly replacing a finish damaged like this will not devalue the desk but increase the price so do not hesitate on a complete refinish if the home fix is not satisifactory.

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
