Collectibles-General (Antiques)/cedar chest

Question
I'm refinishing a Caswell-Runyun "Treasure Chest".  The cedar inside is in good shape, but I would like to replace the red felt (or whatever it is) lining on the bottom of the top pivot-out drawers.  Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi John
Nice to hear from you.
This felt is usually glued on and is miserable stuff to get off.
Most fabric stores sell this material by the yard so its easy to come by.
And a good sanding of the interior cedar will refresh the cedar smell...you didn't ask but just passing that along.
As far as suggestions John, and I assume you mean about removing the old felt, as I said it can be miserable stuff to remove.
I have resorted at times to using hot vinegar which will soften old glue quite well.
Often times a hot iron will do the same.
Its just try and try again.
Good Luck and good question
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
