I recently got a ceader chest from my grandmother, i was just wondering if you could figure out how old it is.  It is from The Standard Red Cedar Chest Co.  Style number 2850 or2s50.  The number etched in the chest is 95.
Thanks for your help!

Answer
Hi Caroline
Nice to hear from you.
I found the following on the net (possibly you did too.

Lane furniture came about in March of 1912 with a man named John Lane and his 21 year old son Ed. John Lane purchased a box plant in Virginia and encouraged his son to create wooden chests in the factory. An interesting note is the Lanes were not overly confident in their success and chose to leave their name out of the company name and went with the name Standard Red Cedar Chest Company.

There is no way I can tell you the age by the numbers you gave me...I really do not think anyone can but the manufacturer.
I'll bet if you contacted them they would help.
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
