Collectibles-General (Antiques)/decorative bowl and 3-footed tray
Expert: Martin G Roberts - 1/3/2004
QuestionMr. Roberts, My question about these items pertains to the fact they both have the same hallmarks "C&CO C L" with a design of building (maybe?) above the letters. The bowl is scalloped on the top and it contains cherubs and grapes and grapevines. It has two handles attached to the bearded face of a man. The bowl itself sits on a low pedestal. I can't tell if it is silver, brass or copper, on the underside of the pedestal it looks to be silver, but the inside looks to be copper. on the outside it has a red patina to it.
The tray is also decorative, but with a different design, and it is more silver in color, but darkened on the raised patterns as well as the feet. What I would like to know is, How old are these items, and where were they made? Do they have any value? Should I clean them? Thank you so much for your time and expertise! Debbie Thomas
Answer-
The mark (definitely NOT 'hallmarks', just a maker's mark) is unknown to me.
The material may be silver plate that is somewhat worn (from polishing), allowing the base metal to show through.
They were made as a bowl and a tray - their function is self-explanatory.
From the info provided, I cannot estimate age - it COULD be anywhere from the late 18th to the late 20th century.
