Hi Kurt
Nice to hear from you.
Sorry I'm a bit confused by what you mean by "shell"
Could you clarify please? Is the shell wood?

hi and it is made of wood. the cot has fold up legs with wheels on them. the cot looks like a big wood suitcase. it also has brass hardware. thanks, kurt

Answer
Hi Kurt
Thanks for getting back to me.
As I had never seen a cot like this I was confused.
I would try to just refresh the wood before taking drastic measures like stripping and refinishing if the shell is not in too bad of shape.
If this was mine, I would first give a good scrubbing with varsol and fine steel wool.
Then a coat of stain..only if the wood appears previously stained.
Then a couple of coats of tung oil in a low lustre finish.
Tung oil is applied with a rag so its easy.
Good Luck Kurt, and get back to me if you need any clarification.
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
