Question
I bought an oak table at an auction.  It has a place on it that looks like someone has set something hot on a vinyl tablecloth.  The vinyl or plastic is rather melted into the wood.  How can I remove this without effecting the finish?

Answer
Hi Cheryl
Nice to hear from you.
Sorry about this but the table top will have to be refinished.
Having said that LOL, if I had the table in my shop, before I attempted refinishing I would see what happened if I used a heat gun to melt the vinyl and attempt to scrape it off.
If this was sucessful,I think there would be a huge blemish left in the finish which I would then try to reamalgamate.
And I thinK I would end up refinishing the entire top but at least I tried.
Hope this helps
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
