Collectibles-General (Antiques)/mildew removal

Question
Dear Eileen Cronk, My auntie has given me an old circa 1930 radio/record player with a box of old 78 records.  The radio was once a beautiful piece of furniture, but has been in my aunt's basement for the pass 40/50 yrs. It has mildew and 40yrs of dust on the beautiful mohagony cabinet. Is there anything I can use to clean it up without stripping it's original finish?  I don't want to distroy the antique value by refinishing it. The make and model is RCA Brunswick-Radiola, I've not found the year of manufacture but it only plays 78 records.  Please Help!!! Thanks, Angel Moy Adams

Answer
Hi Angel
So nice to hear from you.
Aren't these old players neat? I love them.
The first and most gentle approach to start is good old soap and water.
I just use dish soap.
Assemble lots of clean rags and bucket and soap.
Use warm water, and the amount of soap you would use in the dishpan.
Work in small sections, and dry as you go.
Never flood the surface.
If this removes the dirt, apply wax and shine.
Hope this helps Angel, and sure hope the player works.
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
