Question
QUESTION: Hello...I have purchased an antique murphy bed or bed in a cabinet.  It is a beautiful piece that opens in the front into a bed. *****  It is missing the folding spring.***** (The spring that the mattress would lay on.) The bed is the style with the mirror at the top in the middle with the little shelves on each side by the mirror with attached wood applique pieces.  HELP??? I have looked everywhere on line....Is there a folding spring replacement out there somewhere?  Please help??? Thank you so very much...Tamara

QUESTION: Hello Eileen...I contacted Van Dykes.  Unfortunately their mechanism does not fold. The front of my cabinet drops down and then unfolds into a bed. Do you have any other advice or suggestions where I can find the replaceable folding spring? Thank you so very much...Tamara

Answer
Hi again Tamara
Sorry you are having such a time finding this piece.
I just done a bit of searching
http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=murphy+bed+hardware&meta=
It appears that most Murphy beds do not fold as yours does, although I just glanced through the first search page.
I do know that all those hide a bed couches have this folding spring on them.
If I could not find a replacement then I would start looking at these couches. I would look at Goodwill or Sally Anne etc. Anywhere that sold used couches.
I think size wise it would be correct, and I also think a good handy man could make it work.
I see this as your only alternative short of using plywood with hindges which would not be the most comfortable....unless you did not want company to stay too long LOL.
Good luck
Kindest Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
