Question
I have acquired an old printer's table/chest (the drawers are filled with wooden and metal letter print) that I want to restore and use as an island in my kitchen.  I believe the top is 2 inch thick marble which is badly stained with ink and the wooden cabinet is gunky, and I don't know the age or type of wood.  What is the best way to clean the cabinet and can I sand the marble down to remove ink stains or should I hire a professional?

Answer
Hi Fran
Nice to hear from you.
Without seeing this piece, I do not know if the finish under the gunk is in good condition. And it should be intact if the cabinet will be used in the kitchen.
So first try this product on it.

If that does not satisfy you, then perhaps a full stripping and the finish replaced.
Do not sand the marble yourself. It will no doubt be polished marble and sanding will remove this and set it up to absorb more stains.
Do consult a pro for that.
Good Luck and a great question

Eileen
First get a can of marble cleaner at the hardware.

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
