Collectibles-General (Antiques)/old server/buffet

Question
I have what I think is an old server/buffet that appears to be a 1940s Louis XV but it has a sliding top with slate underneath, and it's on casters.  It appears to be oak.  It has some wear and it needs to be cleaned but I don't know what to use to clean it.  I haven't been able to find another piece of furniture like this and I'm wondering if you've ever seen anything like it. There are some numbers stenciled in black on the bottom of the piece. (Don't worry, I'm not going to sell it so value isn't important to me right now, I'd just like to know what it is and how to clean it.)

Answer
Hi Lisa
Nice to hear from you.
I would love to see a picture of this buffet if I could.
My email is ecronk@sympatico.ca
You can clean the wood with a rag dipped in mineral spirits.
You will be amazed at the dirt this will get off.
Then a good waxing, or easier still is a coat of lemon oil after the cleaning.
I would prefer though Lisa to see a picture of the wear before you do anything.
It could be that you will want to put some stain on the wear areas before applying any wax or oil.
Let me know
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
