Question
Barbara,  I have my Mother,s (83) Aunt's thimble.  Looks gold but has tiny amt green inside lip.  10 sides (1/2 way up) alternating plain and double curlique design,  Engraved 7 on one plain side (size?).. Very small - fits my little finger.  Inside = triangle design - point down to shield with S or SS.  Appreciate any info.  Thanks.  Carol

Answer
Hello Carol.  Your thimble is made by Simons Bros. Co. of Philadelphia.  They did not make brass thimbles, so yours is gold.  The mark should look like an old English "S" in a shield (flat top with curved sides ending in a point at the bottom).  The "7" indicates the size of the thimble. From your description, it is known as a "panel" thimble.  They made them in 6, 8, 10, and 12 panel designs.  If you are able to send me a digital picture (bacchino@twcny.rr.com) perhaps I can tell you more.  If you do send a picture, be sure and let me know if the thimble is completely round where you insert your finger and if there are any pin holes (hold the thimble up to the light and look thru the opening).   Barbara
