Question
I have an my parents bedroom suite from when they got married in 1946. It is definitely showing alot of wear, glasses on dressers cigarette burns the glass is not so clear.  How do I go about this repair job? It involves bed, chest of drawers, 2 dressers, and a vanity.  A PROFFESSIONAL offered to do it for $5,000, I thougt this was a little steep.  I am convinced I can do the job my self just need the right way to go about it.   Thank You

Answer
Hi Marie
Nice to hear from you.
I'm certainly glad you never went for the $5000.00 refinishing job for five pieces of furniture...my gosh thats $1000.00 per piece...highway robbery.
Without seeing this set its hard for me to tell you what to do.
It could be that it does not need an entire strip and refinish job.
Before offering any advice, could you tell me what you would like to do with it.
Also do you know what type of wood it is, and is it veneer or solid wood.
Also have you ever undertaken any refinishing.
Get back to me and we will get you going in the right direction.
Kindest Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
