Collectibles-General (Antiques)/refinish or not?

Question
I purchase a Rockwood sideboard at a yard sale.  It appears to be quite old.  I love it the way it is now.  However the top has some damage that could be fixed.  My husband was wondering if it is an antique, would refinishing it decrease it's value.  Also the rest of the piece is perfect so would I "redo" the whole thing or just try to match the top with the rest?  I don't intend to ever sell it, I just like it.  I covered the damage with antique lace and all is well.  But he did peak my curiosty about whether to refinish or not.  Thanks!

Answer
Hi Monica
Nice to hear from you.
I get asked this question a lot Monica, and I usually ask a question back..Are you happy living with the piece the way it is? If the answer is no, then have it refinished.
If this piece is over 100 years old it qualifies as an antique. Refinishing such pieces will decrease their value, but if its in terrible condition, and you do not plan on selling it, then I would refinish.
Repairs are different than a total refinish, and in order to maintain the integrity of the piece it should be fixed.
If the finish on the top of your sideboard is damaged, moisture could get into the wood and cause lots of trouble.
So you see in your case the damage should be fixed.
Have you ever watched the Antiques Roadshow Monica?
This week I saw a table that would have been worth $30,000. if the original finish had not been removed. The value now was $3000. How heartbreaking for the owner.
So this  goes to show us that we should have a good idea of what our furniture is before we tamper with it.
I enjoyed answering this question and hope I have helped you.
Kindest Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
