Collectibles-General (Antiques)/refinishing Hitchcock chairs

Question
I Have 6 Hitchcock Chairs that we use everyday.  They have become very worn, all of them have become very gummy and the finish looks terrible.  You can scap it off with your finger nail.  Do you know anyone who refinishes these chairs?  The gold leaf is even worn off in most cases.  Any refinisher we got we want them to put the gold back in as well as redo the black part.  Is that at all possible?

Answer
Hi Robert
Nice to hear from you.
Yes its possible but it will sure cost a lot.
I would remove this gummy stuff (I see it everyday) with mineral spirits and a rag.
You will be amazed at the result.
Then a light waxing...nothing else.
Hope this helps
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
