Question
I have a mirror that is dated 05/03/1916, it is streaked.  I would like information on refurbishing it. I don't know what value it may have and if that would be destroyed by refurbishing.  It attaches to a dresser that I am also interesed in refinishing. I appreciate your help.  Thanks

Answer
Hi Norma
Nice to hear from you.
You can certainly get a mirror resilvered, but the price is prohibitive, and try to find a place to do it. Its impossible in my area.
There is no way to refurbish a mirror once the silvering has reached this stage. The old silvering must be removed and new applied.
Go ahead and get a new piece of mirror for your frame.
It will certainly not devalue your dresser and mirror in any way.
Thank You for a great question.
Please write any time.
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
