Collectibles-General (Antiques)/repairing antique larkin desk

Question
Eileen,
My 120 year old "larkin desk" or secretary has fallen over and sustained damage to the door and the mirror.  The curved door cracked into two pieces and the front sustained several dings.  This is the first damage done to the piece.  I have recieved several estimates for repair using a variety of materials.  Should I be concerned about the materials and techniques used or just whatever works to restore it to its original appearance?  Obviously, I will not strip and refinish it.

Answer
Hi Anne
Nice to hear from you.
Gosh I am sorry this has happened to your lovely desk.
As this desk will have some value, I would certainly have it restored using the proper materials and methods.
Certainly not just whatever the restorer wants to use...and if you hire the proper person, there will be no question that he will do this job as it should be done.
Certainly check out his references..he should gladly supply you with these.
Good Luck
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
