Collectibles-General (Antiques)/roll top desk tambour

Question
Hi Eileen,
In the process of moving my granddad's roll top desk, something happened and the tambour will only open a few inches and then comes in contact with an obstruction.  How should I begin to look for and fix this?  I hesitate to take it apart in case I damage it further or in some new way.

Thanks for your help!
Margaret

Answer
Hi Margaret
Nice to hear from you.
Just make sure its not the door that has come out of square.
If its angled at all it will cause this obstruction.
If thats OK, the back will have to come off to find where the obstruction is.
And never use force because then you will cause damage.
It will be very minor as there is not much in there to go wrong.
And get some help if you are nervous about taking the back off.
Good Luck and a great question.
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
