Question

rway chair
I am refinishing and reupholstering my grandmothers 4 danish modern 1950 rway mahogony chairs.  A couple of the cahirs are loose at the back legs ( due to leaning back in them) where they were joined with the chair sides.  After taking off the inner triangle, I cannot pop the leg from the side.  How is it consrtucted?

Answer
Hi Vicki
Nice to hear from you.
There will be dowels that hold the side pieces to the back/leg section. Usually two pieces of dowell about 2 to 3 inches log inserted into drilled holes in both sections.
But you will cause more damage if you try to knock just this section apart.
You could damage the rest of the chair.
So both the left and right sides will need removing. The old glue removed, reglue and clamp.
Not really that hard but be gentle.
Hope this helps

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
