Collectibles-General (Antiques)/sanding

Question
Hi, I just bought a solid bar stool chair. Some of it was stained a red color and the rest was not. I just sanded it a little to get most of the red out. I was going to just put clear on it and leave it alone. Is that what you would do? Thanks Becky

Answer
Hi Becky
Nice to hear from you.
Becky, you did not tell me what kind of wood this is, but in all cases I always use a stain.
Even if its a natural color stain, use it.
Not only does it enhance the wood, but it protects the wood a certain amount from the finish going too deep if the piece is ever refinished again.
I have come accross a lot of ruined pieces where people have just put a poly finish on bare wood.
I would never put poly on old furniture, unless its a high use table top, but thats what some people do.
Hope this helps
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
