Question
I have an old wooden fold up box (we think the wood is oak) on the box there is an oval shape with the words Patented February 19, 1889,when you undo the small latch on the end of the box, it unfolds into 4 sections that  lay flat. Each fold(or section) contains parts I'm assuming to a sewing machine everything has its own place in the box. It's really neat to see it unfold and fold back up again. Anything you can tell me about it would be great. Thanks, Penny & Jack

Answer
Hello Penny.  You have a sewing machine accessories box.  It is oak and it folds out flat to allow the machine operator to choose from any number of metal machine pieces contained in the box.  Most of the boxes I have seen did not come with the accessories, but those I have seen had different types of "feet" for the sewing machine which would enable the operator to sew zippers, etc.  The boxes are not uncommon.  I've seen them in shops for less than $20.  You might want to check ebay once in awhile, as this type of box has shown up on that forum before.  If you are interested in the patent, you can search for it on line at the Government Patents web site.  Hope you enjoy your sewing accessories box.  Barb
