Question
unusual  approx. 22"L -60" around barrel body with 4 drawers ea. 21"L  oak wood, cradle like stand allows it to lay sationary & drawers to slide out. embossed (etched flowers and print) reads "J&P Coats. spool cotton 50/50" brass hardware on drawers-  I think actually it is designed to look like a wooden  thread spool that sits on it's side and allows 2&1/2" deep drawers to contain embroidery thread can you date it or give me any info. is it of any value? Thank you

Answer
Hello R.J.  I can't give you a value without seeing the item, as condition is everything.  It sounds like you have a spool chest or spool cabinet.  There are two books, that I know of, out on the subject, that are quite comprehensive as to pictures and values.  You might try your local library, a book store or an internet site.  Spool chests/cabinets were popular in the General Store as they served two purposes - advertising the product in an eye catching display and storage for the product itself.  There are outlets for original decals, hardware, etc. for restoration of such pieces.  Your best bet for finding a value is to take a picture of the item to local shops or find an appraiser in your area who can look at the piece.  Good luck.  Barb
