Subject: thimble value

Question
I have a 3/4" tall thimble which has written in it "sterling". It also has enamel or porcelain 1/4" width band at the base. It appears to have some sort of fruit with vines across the enamel band. How can I show you a photo? I am new to this site. Please help me determine the value of this thimble. Flawless condition, no holes, no chips in enamel or marks of any kind. Thank you.

Answer
Hello Kent. I would need to see a picture of your thimble to give you any kind of value.  If you can send a digital picture to me at bacchino@twcny.rr.com I'll see what I can do.  In the meantime, look inside the top of the thimble and see if there is any maker's mark.  Maybe something like an Old English S in a shield?  Also, look on the top...does there seem to be an eight or six pointed star on the top?  The "punches" above the band are called knurling.  Do you find any stamps in the knurling above the band such as GERMANY?  One last thought...If I am picturing your thimble as you describe, there may be one on ebay now.  Go and search on "enamel" in the thimbles category and see if it's like yours.  The one on ebay looks like oranges with vines between them.  I look forward to receiving a picture.  Best Regards - Barb
