Question
hi barbara, my mum has just found some silver and gold items in my dads shed, (he passed away 2 years ago) we didn't know they were there.  Among them is a silver thimble with a deep clear purple stone imbedded in the top, there is no damage, could you shed some light. many thanks.

Answer
Hello Karen.  Thimbles were made with glass, synthetic and real gemstones.  You will need to have a gemologist look to see what it is.  As far as the thimble itself it concerned, if you can provide a picture or describe any marks found on the band of the thimble or in the knurling just above the band or inside the top of the thimble, it may help me provide you more info.  bacchino@twcny.rr.com.  Barb
