Question
Ihave an old pair of sewing scissors that are in the shape of what looks like a stork or some kind of bird. Can you tell me the approx age and value. i also have 3 old thimbles. 1 has what looks like leaf etching on bottom half, 1 has some kind of butterfly or something similar and 1 is slick but has a name engraved on it. Also would like to know their value or where I can take them to get them appraised.

thank you
pam

Answer
Hello Pam.  Scissors have been made in the shape of storks (and other shapes) for many years, so I am unable to date or give you a value on them without seeing them.  However, if you can find any marks on the blades or handles, you can research the maker to give you a timeframe they were produced.  If there are no makers marks, chances are, your scissors are contemporary (modern).  As far as the thimbles, again - I would need photographs to tell you anything about them.  You don't say what type of material they are made out of, which affects value.  The condition, pattern, date, etc. all contribute to the value.  If you are able to take digital pictures, you can send them to me at bacchino@twcny.rr.com and I'll see if I can tell you more.  If you are unable to send digital pictures, there are numerous books out on thimbles.  Perhaps your local library could find some for you.  There are many Internet sites on thimbles and many are offered on ebay, so you may find something similar to what you have.  If you are looking for an appraisal, you really need to take them to someone who can handle them.  Look in your phone book for antique dealers or appraisers and see if they are willing to help you.  You will pay for an appraisal.  If you shop them around to dealers with the intention of selling them, bear in mind, they will need to make money on the resale and may offer you considerably less than what they are worth.  Hope I've helped.  Barb
