Question
Where could I safely send a thimble collection to be evaluated? I have 16 old ones some silver some plated and some plain. None are older than 100yrs I don't think. Thanks, Rita

Answer
Hello Rita.  I wouldn't send a thimble collection anywhere to be evaluated!  There's just too much chance for loss and/or damage.  And if you don't know the value of the collection, you can't adequately insure it.  You need to physically take your collection to an appraiser in your area.  Check the yellow pages in your phone book.  You cannot get a fair valuation without a "hands on" approach.  There are a number of thimble collectors throughout the US who might be able to help.  http://www.thimblecollectors.com has a list of state contacts.  If you are in NY state, you may contact me at bacchino@twcny.rr.com.  If you have digital pictures you can send, I can give you information about each thimble, but I would not appraise them for you.  There are a number of books out on thimbles and many contain pictures and price guides.  You can also check out selling prices of thimbles on ebay to give you an idea of worth.  Hope I've helped.  Barb
