Collectibles-General (Antiques)/used carpet may have holes or rot?

Question
Hi!  I got a ridiculously cheap carpet at a flea market -- it looks like a prayer rug.  There are some ratty holes in it, which I don't much care about.  However, there are some little white fluffy non-rug bits that a passer-by told me are some kind of carpet fungus that causes the holes.  Do you know anything about this?  Can anything be done to prevent the progressive decay of an already ratty rug?  Thank you very much.

Answer
Hi Jenny
Nice to hear from you.
Jenny the only thing I can think has happened to this rug is moisture. The fluffy stuff could indeed be fungus as a lady told you.
Once the carpet has been thouroughly dried, this should not be a problem.
Is there any way you can get it out in a nice sunny spot outdoors for a few hours?
Not on the ground, but perhaps over a couple of saw horses
to get the air all around it.
Then a good vaccuming.
I think it would also be helpful to spray both sides of the rug with LYSOL Spray.
Hope this helps
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
