Collectibles-General (Antiques)/How do I value a Cavalier Cedar Chest?

Question
I was given a Cavalier Cedar Chest from my aunt - she is
67. She said the chest used to belong to her uncle, my
great uncle. It is scratched up a bit and has a couple of
pieces missing but is in generally good shape and working
order. The numbers stamped on the bottom are 9244 &
3267. Other than these markings, and the Cavalier stamp inside I
don't find any paperwork or serial # etc. I was wondering how I
can value this piece? Can you give me a range of what it might be
worth? Thanks.

Answer
Hello R Arbour
Nice to hear from you.
I can only tell you what I see these chests sell for in my neck of the woods.
The highest was $475.00...this was very fine condition, and the lowest was $125.00.
A few years back I could pick up cedar chests for $50.00, but folks seem to be going for them more lately.
I actually refinished a Cavalier last week.
It looked pretty bad before I started, but it came out beautifully.
The owner had paid $80.00 at a yard sale. I felt he got it for a good price.
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
