Question
i have a very old pic frame-at least 60 yrs old or better-it is wood but resembles pewter look-it is a patriotic frame with american eagle and flags on the top-i am trying to identify the wood-and carving on top-can you direct me please

Answer
Hi Bonnie
So nice to hear from you.
Your wood frame that resembles pewter is actually a top coating over wood of a plaster/gesso type of product.
I actually have several of these frames.
These frames were origanilly made for service mens portraits.
As to the kind of wood Bonnie, it could be anything from birch to pine. These were mass produced during the war years, and wood type was not an issue.
The carving you describe is of course just what you thought..patriotic emblems.
I am noticing in my area these frames are becoming sought after and I have watched them sell for as much as $75.00 in very fine condition at local auctions.
Hope this helps Bonnie.
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
