Collectibles-General (Antiques)/wood split

Question
Ms. Cronk, I bought a marble top desk I was told was fruitwood. There are slight splits or cracks in the case on both sides of the desk. On one side the split is very visable when you pull out the drawer and can see the split on the inside, it's wider on the inside, where the drawer is located.

My question is, will these splits or cracks, continue to widen, or travel so to speak? If they do, what can I do to prevent this?

Thank you for your time,
Michael

Answer
Hi Micheal
Nice to hear from you.
These splits are caused by climate change.
There is nothing you can do about it but get a humidity guide and add moisture to your air if the house is dry.
If the moisture is stabilised now the cracks should stop and they will close as the wood absorbs moisture.
Also keep furniture out of direct sun and away from direct heat sources.
Hope this helps

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
