Collectibles-General (Antiques)/wood

Question
We purchased this dresser from a garage sale. We are unsure of what kind of wood it is made from. The patterns on the drawers are different from eachother. The top drawer is a light backing with darker swirly lines on it. The same pattern is on the side in one section as well. The other two drawers are much darker with a similar yet subtle pattern as the top one. That is also on the side in a different section.  So the color and patterns are not uniform but overall the wood is a dark stain. So I quess my question is, how can we find out what kind of wood this dresser is made from by looking at the patterns?  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Nichole
Nice to hear from you.
I could tell you the wood with a nice clear picture.
Its also possible that you have a false grain wood.
This is a paint technique often used years ago.
So can I get a picture as wood is so variable there is no way for me to tell you this way.
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
